🎤 Presenter

Michael Sugarman has been an activist in the stuttering and disability communities since the 1970s. He was co-founder and former Executive Director of the National Stuttering Project and former chair of the International Stuttering Association. Michael wrote for academic journals and promoted people-first language and stuttering awareness in “It’s Ok to Stutter” (Journal of Fluency Disorders) and the Perniciousness of Labels (Transactional Analysis Journal). As a medical social worker, he recently updated his children’s book, The Adventures of Phil and Dotty. Michael currently co-facilitates a peer support group and is co-writing an article on peer and professional facilitation of support groups, emphasizing mindfulness communication, self-care skills, and resilience.

Self-disclosure is not as simple as it seems. This workshop will present a format for successful self-advocacy, based on research and real-life examples. The workshop will engage participants to explore self-advocacy through the lens of people who stutter and allies. And we will provide space to experience the do's and don'ts of disclosure through interactive role play with honest and constructive feedback. This workshop will offer a foundational introduction to “why” self-advocacy matters and the practical “how to” to give participants practical knowledge and skills to improve their communication experiences - for both conversational partners.

🎤 Presenters

Jennifer Scharf, M.A. CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and a person who stutters. Jen is the founder of Speech Works SRQ, a private speech and stuttering therapy practice in Southwest Florida serving children, teens and adults. Jen is an NSA Chapter Leader for the Adult and Family chapters in Sarasota, FL and a cohort member of Transcending Stuttering. Jen lives in Sarasota, FL with her husband, 3 children and 2 dogs.


Uri Schneider, M.A. CCC-SLP is a leading clinician, educator, and researcher at Schneider Speech (personalized speech therapy) and faculty at UC Riverside School of Medicine. Greg Pandise is a person who stutters, sales professional in financial services, and former college athlete. When he is not working he enjoys training for ultrarunning and triathlon, doing outdoor activities and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, finding a great book to read and coaching lacrosse. Greg has been a person who stutters since he was young and has experiences with speech therapy in his early years and even through his teenage and early adult life. He is grateful for everything stuttering has taught him and uses the lessons learned to deal with adversity, achieve his goals, and fostering a positive mental attitude. He loves staying involved in the stuttering community and works with a couple of non-profits and is a mentor at TranscendingX.

Stuttering is an emotional journey, and its ups and downs can leave many PWS and loved ones feeling frustrated. But there is hope. Our interactive workshop will include true stories of adversity and show how they found their way. Coming to terms with stuttering is about learning how to dance with your stutter, not fighting it.

Through small group discussions and exercises, facilitated by our team, participants will explore a 4-part framework: self-knowledge, self-adjustment, self-acceptance, and self-advocacy. Discover how to build resilience, identify strengths, and tap into inner resources. Leave with practical takeaways and renewed hope.

Identity is a complex phenomenon and stuttering can affect our identities in a variety of ways. How do we come to understand ourselves? How do we come to understand ourselves as individuals who stutter? How might our identities change over time? This presentation will discuss factors that influence our identities, intersectionality of multiple identities, and ways that individuals who stutter think about identity.

🎤 Presenter

Dr. Derek E. Daniels is an associate professor and graduate program director in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on stuttering. Derek is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Fluency Disorders, and an assistant editor for Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences and Disorders. He is a person who stutters and conducts research on psychosocial aspects of stuttering. In particular, Derek's research focuses on public perceptions of stuttering, and factors that influence the psychosocial experiences of individuals who stutter. He is particularly interested in identity, stigma, intersectionality, self-help groups, and culturally responsive practices as they pertain to individuals who stutter and individuals with communication challenges. In addition, he is also interested in qualitative research methods, sociocultural (Vygotskian) theory, and social constructionism. Derek is a native of Houston, TX, and currently enjoys urban life in Detroit. He is a former President of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA), and currently serves as MSHA's Vice-President (VP) for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Anita Blom, Keynote Speaker, Award-winning Stuttering Activist and Proud Person Who Stutters, born and raised in the Netherlands, is living in Sweden. She worked as an operation manager for the Workers’ Educational Association. She has been a board member, including chairperson, of stuttering organizations on local, national, European and International level, and an advisory board member of several international stuttering organizations. She was a national and international keynote speaker on stuttering, had her own stuttering consultant company, was one of the Stutter Social hosts, was a project leader of several major stuttering projects, and twice Member of the Year. She was also a leader of national and international children and youth camps for over 20 years. Anita, aka Scatsis, has stuttered since she was 9 and had a troublesome youth because of her stuttering. She went from being silent, to giving stuttering a voice, from pre-school children to the European Parliament, now inspiring people who stutter of all ages, they can make a difference. Do check out her papers to the ISAD online conferences. Due to health issues she now has to take it slow, but is still an inspiration to many, acknowledged by Voice Unearthed on the Wall Of Inspiration, STAMMA, and many others. Her slogan, is used all around the world; “Sure I stutter. What are you good at?”

Anita has been proudly associated with Skaraborgs Stuttering Chapter, Swedish Stuttering Association, Stamily, and the International Stuttering Association, and International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD).

Kristin Chmela is a speech language pathologist and board certified specialist who has worked primarily with children of all ages who stutter at her clinic Chmela Communication Center in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. She is a lecturer, author, and is co-founder and co-director of Camp Shout Out, a therapeutic experience and training program for kids who stutter ages 8-18 as well as graduate students and speech therapists. Kristin has completed 400 hours of yoga training and is a certified mindfulness instructor. She spends most of her time working with individuals who stutter, clutter, and have other fluency disorders. She recently directed and co-produced Kids Who Stutter Support Teachers: Branch Out (see below) and continues to integrate self-advocacy into therapy with her clients.

Joseph Donaher, Ph.D., is the Academic and Research Program Director of the Center for Childhood Communication at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Donaher is an Assistant Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a board-certified specialist in Fluency and Fluency Disorders. Currently, Dr. Donaher serves on the Editorial Review Board for ASHA’s Perspectives on Fluency and Fluency Disorders and the Research and Publications Committee of the International Fluency Association. His clinical and research interests focus on the assessment and treatment of school-age children who stutter and disfluency patterns secondary to neurological conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

My Journey from Stuttering to Professional Speaking

Larry Stein stuttered for 50 years, compromising his career and other parts of his life to avoid stuttering. After a few decades of stuttering severely, his speech improved quite a bit in his 30s and 40s due to speaking more in the workplace. Then, in his mid-50s, in an effort to save the business of his dreams, Larry made one last-ditch attempt to improve his speech.

Over the next two years:

  • relearned to speak

  • addressed the psychological impacts of his stuttering

  • took steps to take on speaking challenges that once paralyzed him

  • experienced the surprising impact in his personal and professional life

While not a perfect speaker, he has gained the confidence in his speech to build his dream business and speak professionally to business groups. He has a book about his journey with stuttering coming out in the fall.

Bio:

Studies show that 11% of stuttering therapy cases are eventually diagnosed with cluttering, or a mix of cluttering and stuttering. Many people have repeated therapies that did not (completely) "fit.” Failing therapy can be a negative influence on people who clutter. We can do better. Learn how.

🎤 Presenters

Manon Spruit, MSc. is an SLP in a private practice since 1995, and took over the practice in 2000 turning the practice into a specialized center for Speech and Language Therapy and Fluency Therapy. Manon lectured at several universities of applied sciences and schools for SLPs in The Netherlands, Germany and Poland, presented workshops on topics of stuttering and cluttering around Europe and North America. In 2021, she expanded the center for Speech and Language Therapy and Fluency Therapy to include specialization in speech and language problems in people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.


Rutger Wilhelm
is chair-elect of the International Cluttering Association. Also, he is board member of the Dutch Stuttering Association and has served the board of the International Stuttering Association (ISA) in the past. Rutger has published a book about his experiences with cluttering: Too fast for words.

Dr. Maguire has published his research in several leading journals and has delivered hundreds of invited presentations nationally and internationally on the topics of stuttering, bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric conditions.

Every creature engages its waking life with a certain level of energy. Life-force energy is measured in something called “STATE.” The state a creature engages life determines how we thrive or just survive - in anything we’re aiming to do.

Attendees will participate (hands-on) and learn two art techniques. We will gain understanding and skills to appreciate how art creation builds connections with clients, as well as deepening self-awareness.

🎤 Presenter
Sarah Beth Solomont received her Master's degree in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1997. Since then, Sarah Beth has been using her creative gifts to facilitate psychological healing and deeper self-understanding by means of art, play, and other forms of self-expression in her private practice, group settings, and professional trainings.


🎯 Agenda:

  1. Introducing expressive art therapy - the use of art therapeutically

  2. How to introduce a new technique in the treatment

  3. Introduce a warm-up: scribble drawing - attendees will experience doing the activity and process in the group.

  4. Introduce art structure: bridge drawing - attendees will experience and process in the group

  5. How to process an art structure for deeper self-awareness
